J. D Robb’s In Death is one of those classic series which has been either read by every bookholic or has been in their TBR list. Obsession in Death is the 40th book in the series. Yes, you heard it correctly, I said 40. Written by the sensational Nora Roberts writing as J. D Robb. It is a series which has found it’s own niche and place in reader’s heart and has had a steady following from the last 20 years.

Obsession in Death is the 20th anniversary book and it can be read as a stand-alone. Eve Dallas, homicidal investigator in New York City faced with a new challenge of her career. A murderer is on a killing spree to right the injustice of not giving the respect and accolades that the killer think eve deserves. So unless he is happy, he will go on killing to rectify all the wrongs inflicted on eve. To make matter worse he is leaving messages on the crime scene. Soon, this obsessive killer is slowly turning it’s attention to those people who are close to Eve. Until then Eve has to find the killer before the lives of her loved ones is endangered.

Eve Dallas was a tough, no nonsense investigator who get gets down to business when she means it. While I enjoyed her character I felt hard to warm up to her. As the 40th book was my introduction to this series, I think Eve is a character whose back story is essential in sympathising and supporting her. I found her a little de-attached from the people around her. I wish there was some humour sprinkled in between conversations as the few instances felt flat for me. My favourite scene os eve would be the one where she interrogates some street rats who comes on to her. Let’s just say I always wanted a girl to totally do that.

Besides that I felt the numerous amount of side characters popping in and out disconcerting making me bang my head wishing I had read the previous books. As this was one book the side characters had such depth that it made me read more just to dig deep in to Eve Dallas’ world. I have saved the best to the last. I loooved Roarke and Eve’s relationship. While she was so tough and hard on the outside, with Roarke she was a softer, more vulnerable version of herself which left me wanting for more. Roarke was smouldering and sweet and all things wonderful. Taking into account that this started 20 years ago, Roarke must me one of the first book boyfriends for many readers and I think he definitely deserves the love and attention showered at him in the reviews.

Obsession in Death is another solid addition to an already rocking series which has been with reader from the last 20 years. It ticks all the boxes, delivering everything a reader may ask for. It has a kick ass heroine with a faithful side kick, side characters which demand your attention and a love story which makes you swoon with its touching scene.

I believe that Obsession in Death will be enjoyed by regular fans of In Death series but also by new-comers like me who are curious and wondering what is the fuss is about.
